It’s almost been a year since I took the job here at Florida Tech, and I think I’ve gathered enough information as to why this is a special place. I am very lucky to be given this position here at Florida Tech and want to let everyone know why they should check this university out. When it comes to taking an assistant job at the college baseball level, it starts with the head coach. Jeff Tam is a special and unique leader that I have the pleasure to work with daily. When you look into the academics of Florida Tech, you can’t deny the pedigree. When you step onto our campus, there’s a good chance that you will walk away impressed. Our athletic department is in good hands when it comes to Jamie Joss. If you want to talk culture and player development, you’re in the right place if you’re reading these blogs.

A program is defined by who is at the helm of it and our leader is Jeff Tam. Coach Tam’s roots run deep in the Melbourne community going all the way back to graduating from Eau Gallie High School here locally. He then went on to play at Florida State and was able to sign a professional contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.  Coach Tam had a lengthy professional career that included 6 years in the MLB with the Indians, Athletics and Blue Jays.

After his big league career, he decided to get into college coaching in the early 2010’s with Eastern Florida State College. He was quickly promoted to Head Coach and was at the helm for 7 years. He then decided to come across town to become a Florida Tech Panther. Coach Tam was an assistant for 3 years before taking over the program in December of 2021. This past year was his first full year as head coach of Florida Tech.

In year one of working with Coach Tam, I have learned that he’s what the world of College baseball needs. A head coach who is honest, fair, and cares about you as a person. With college athletics becoming more of a business by the day, it is tough to find a leader who still operates on what is morally right. In previous blogs, I’ve explained how I value many other things outside of the game of baseball and it’s an absolute pleasure to come to work each day with someone who I align with. I feel extremely confident in the future of this program working alongside this staff.

When you look at the name of our institution, you can see why our school’s future is bright. There is no turning back on how much the world relies on technology. There is one article that I would love for you to look into of why you should choose to get your degree from Florida Tech, but before that answer this one question. Why do you want a college degree?

Florida Tech Grads Among Most Employable, Global Ranking Finds

This article shows how well Florida Tech will prepare you for life after college. The number of programs we offer is on the rise as well. On top of having a fantastic degree, our campus is stunning as well. Our school just shot some fantastic drone footage of our campus.

When looking at the competition level of baseball, you’re not going to find a better spot at the NCAA Division II level. The Sunshine State Conference sends teams to the NCAA Division II World Series on a consistent basis. The year 2015 was a special one for the Florida Tech Panthers- because we made a regional final game along with having a future MLB player on our team, Austin Allen. Our rich history also includes alumni such as Tim Wakefield. This is true for many of the other teams in our conference. Here’s the lengthy list of the amount of All-Americans that come from our conference each year.

It’s easy to see why Florida Tech is a great place to be. If you want to talk more about our program, shoot me an email at twharton@fit.edu. It’s easy to get to know more about it by just looking through the blogs found on this website!

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
