I’m writing this in the hospital awaiting the birth of our first child. Hurricane Milton is about to make landfall on the west coast of Florida. We are in Orlando and our home is on the east coast of Florida. If you’ve read some of my blogs or know a little about my life, you know that this is far from the first challenge that Taylor and I have faced in life. Chaos seems to follow us but we never stop moving forward. We were trying to have a child for 6 years before our little miracle came about. I’m so proud of how strong Taylor has been throughout her pregnancy and our daughter is so lucky to have her as a Mom. Now that it’s only hours away from becoming a Dad, I’m reflecting on what I want to improve the most so I can show my daughter the correct way to go about life. The one that I want to improve most is creating routine and consistency.
Routine and consistency is something that I’ve struggled with ever since I stopped playing baseball. While playing baseball, my routine was very selfish. This sounds like a bad thing. It was not for me. To become the baseball player I wanted to be, I had to be selfish. Working out in the gym and on the field was always the priority. I was so lucky to have Taylor and my family support my vision for playing the game of baseball as long as I did. There are not many girlfriends/fiancés that would let their man go out to New Mexico and play baseball for 50 dollars a week. I am forever grateful, especially for that year of baseball- because I learned so much about the player development process that I would not have otherwise.
Now, I just explained how I had routine and consistency when I played the game of baseball. Why did I lose it when I got out of the game? The reason being is that my focus broadened. I had to be focused on being a good coach and husband. I would say ever since I decided to go all in on coaching, I’ve given everything I had to become better. Also, with every year that has passed, I’ve learned what it takes to become the best husband I can be. These two things require work and effort, but not my definition of routine. I am always making adjustments on the fly. The work schedule as a coach is never the same. As a college coach, I have three different seasons. Playing, recruiting and fall. Fall is a combination of team practice and recruiting. This makes it more difficult to develop a routine. As I’m writing this I’m telling myself, “Stop making excuses.” Which is true. I need to get better at making a healthy routine a priority of mine.
As I get older, the closer I get to achieving my goal of being a collegiate head coach. This is a level of leadership that I strive to obtain. A main quality of many of the leaders that I admire is physical and mental fitness. Tim Corbin being one of them. Here is a piece of an article from the Tennessean.
As of right now, I am falling short in that department. I need to put my physical and mental fitness as my main priority to show my daughter the importance of this value. To wrap up the physical fitness aspect of this, it’s as simple as, “Shut up, wake up, and get to work.”.
The mental fitness aspect of routine and consistency is linked with CTD Baseball. I have many excuses/reasons not to put on the 4th annual CTD Conference. I’m not listening to those excuses. I am planning on hosting the 4th annual conference on December 7th at Kinetic Pro Performance. Casey Mullholland spoke at the first CTD Conference and allowed me to host day 2 of CTD last year at his facility. He has graciously allowed me to host at his facility again. This year will be just one day and run more as a clinic style rather than conference. If you are interested in attending, it will be free and I’d love to see you there. All you need to do is message me and inform me of your attendance.

I also have a plan for the blog of CTD. This is my 53rd blog on my CTD website. I will have 4 categories. The first one will be a blog on my life. This will be an aspect of my life that I’m going through that may help you have perspective on a situation that you are going through. The 2nd category will be coaching philosophy/player development. This will be something in my coaching life that I believe or a theory that I am putting out into the world. The 3rd category will be book of the month. I’ll just go over my perspective on a book that I’ve read and how I plan to implement what I have learned from it. The last category will be a Q+A from someone that I respect. It may be some of my best friends in and outside the world of sports or a person who I respect from afar. I enjoyed doing podcasts over covid and I see this as an obtainable way to learn from people who I respect. If you would like to subscribe, go to my homepage and sign up!
